What to Consider When Purchasing CBD For Your Furry Friend

Updated: Sep 17, 2020

Unless you've been living under a rock, you've probably seen CBD products made specifically for pets. Everyone from mom and pop shops to big box retailers are carrying CBD for pets. There are dozens of brands, leaving consumers wondering which products are the best fit for their furry friend.

According to an article released by Hemp Industry Daily*, pet-related CBD sales nearly doubled between 2018 and 2019. And with pet parents being more mindful of what they give their furry friends, it's not likely to dip anytime soon.

Despite the popularity of pet-specific CBD products, the FDA has not yet authorized CBD for pets. As of the time of this writing, their review of CBD for pets is still pending. But wait, does that mean it's safe for Fluffy?

Here's where it gets tricky. Just like people, CBD can affect each pet differently. It is advised to always do your homework, and if your pet is on any medication, always talk to a vet first.

There are a few things to consider when shopping for a pet-friendly CBD product. First and foremost is the ingredients. Some essential oils (in flavored CBD products) that are safe for human consumption might not be safe for your cat or dog. If the label has a novel for an ingredient list, it's worth looking at other alternatives.

T-Free is key. THC, the psychoactive component in cannabis, can counteract the CBD. Animals metabolize things differently than humans (think about dogs and chocolate), so making sure your pets are getting ONLY CBD is important.

Do the store reps use the products on their own pets? When talking to someone selling pet CBD products, it's important to know if they trust the product enough to use it on their own pets.

While there are hundreds of different pet-specific CBD products out there, finding the right one can feel like finding a needle in a haystack. But by doing your homework and asking the right questions, you can find the right product for your furry friend.
